Storage planning

Choose storage around a specific job.

Useful storage planning begins with the task, not the product category. A photo archive, a development database, and an AI experiment make different demands on space, speed, access, and recovery. Naming the job helps you decide which tradeoffs matter and which features would add complexity without solving a real problem.

Use these guides to build a short inventory: what data exists, where it lives, who can change it, and what must survive a device failure. Include the computer or application that will need access later. Capacity is one part of the plan; compatibility, encryption, working space, and a verified backup can be just as consequential.

Start with the introductory guide if the terminology is unfamiliar, then follow the platform or workflow that fits. Before adopting a layout, try the smallest representative version with replaceable data. That gives you a concrete basis for the final decision and a checklist to revisit when your project grows.
