Platform Guides

Understand the storage tools on your computer.

Operating systems use similar words for different layers of storage. A container, a volume, and a virtual disk may appear close together in an interface while serving separate purposes. These guides explain the relationships in plain language so you can understand a layout before changing it. They also connect platform-specific choices to ordinary concerns such as capacity, access, and portability.

On Mac, start with APFS containers and volumes to understand shared space and the choices shown in Disk Utility. On Windows, look at an attached VHDX as a data workspace and consider how access protection and recovery will work. These are different workflows; a familiar file extension alone does not make a workspace universally portable.

Before making a storage change, record the current layout and keep a verified copy of important data. Check the tools available on the actual computer you will use. A sound decision accounts for both the current environment and the device that might need to open the files later.
